Zara searched through millions of returning names.

Each name moved past her with its own scent.

Flowers.

Rain.

Leather.

Smoke.

Skin.

Home.

She could no longer understand everything.

She was no longer an ocean.

She was simply Zara.

It had to be enough.

Adisa disappeared piece by piece.

First his hands.

Then his shoulders.

His face began to fade.

No Gris Charnel remained.

“I cannot find your name!” Zara cried.

Adisa tried to speak, but his voice was already disappearing.

Portrait of a Lady surrounded them.

The fragrance was hers again.

Only hers.

A familiar scent entered the darkness.

Amouage Guidance.

Folake stood beside Zara.

Not alive.

Not fully gone.

“Grandmother...”

“You have always known him,” Folake said.

Zara looked at the fading shape in her arms.

“His name is gone.”

“A True Name is not a word.”

Guidance moved around them.

Zara closed her eyes.

She remembered the Tube.

The first trace of black tea across the carriage.

The coffee shop.

Gris Charnel waiting in the corner.

The archive.

Fig and sandalwood remaining after Adisa left.

The bridge.

The night in Hackney.

His fragrance on the pillow.

The blade.

His scent disappearing as his heart stopped.

The black river.

Rose and Gris Charnel setting the water on fire.

She understood.

A True Name was the full truth of a life.

Zara placed both hands around what remained of his face.

“Adisa.”

Not the name other people called him.

The name she knew him by.

The man who had survived being called nothing.

The man who smelled of black tea, fig and warm wood.

The man who held the world in place.

The man she loved.

Portrait of a Lady rose.

Then Gris Charnel answered.

Faintly.

Once.

Adisa returned.

He fell into her arms.

The Gate began to close.

Across the world, people woke with their names restored.

Folake smiled.

Guidance grew softer.

Zara reached toward her.

“Grandmother...”

“I know, my love.”

Adisa looked at Folake.

“Thank you.”

She turned toward him.

“Hold the world well.”

Then Amouage Guidance faded.

Not suddenly.

Pear first.

Then incense.

Then vanilla and sandalwood.

The Gate closed.

Darkness became light.

Portrait of a Lady and Gris Charnel remained.
