The Perfume She Wore To Her Interview

She had the portfolio, the references, the dress. What she had not decided at seven AM was the perfume.

The interview was at nine. She was ready by seven. This was not anxiety — this was the particular preparedness of a woman who had wanted this job for two years, had applied twice before without success, and had spent the intervening time making herself impossible to overlook.

She had the portfolio. She had the references. She had researched the company so thoroughly she could have delivered the annual report from memory. She had the dress — navy, structured, the kind that did not ask for attention and received it anyway.

What she had not decided, at seven AM, was the perfume.

Scent was not decorative. It was information. It arrived before she did. It stayed after she left. It told the room something about her before she opened her mouth.

She stood in front of her dressing table with three options and the particular dilemma of someone who understood that scent was not decorative. It was information. It arrived before she did. It stayed after she left.

The first option was safe. The second was too much for nine in the morning. The third was the Gucci Bloom she had bought six months ago and worn only on occasions that deserved it.

She picked up the Bloom. Spritzed it twice — neck and left wrist. The tuberose bloomed immediately. White, clean, confident. Not aggressive. Not trying too hard. The scent of someone who had decided, long before walking into the room, that she belonged there.

She got the job.

The hiring manager told her, three months later over lunch, that she had known within the first four minutes. “You just seemed completely settled in yourself,” she said. “Like nothing could rattle you.”

Adaeze smiled. She thought about the seven AM decision. The third bottle. The two spritzes. “I was very well prepared,” she said.
