Matteo Greco knew he was going to die when Ade stopped calling him brother.

It was not the gun. He had not seen one yet.

It was the way Ade stood across the Apapa warehouse and said his name.

“Matteo.”

For fifteen years, Ade had called him brother at weddings, construction sites, and port meetings where government officials arrived hungry and left satisfied.

When Matteo’s son was born, Ade had carried the boy through the hospital corridor and told everyone that Dante Greco was his nephew. When Ade’s first major contract nearly collapsed, Matteo had moved money through three countries in forty-eight hours and saved their company.

There had been birthdays, late-night deals, arguments over whisky and families moving freely through each other’s homes. Ade knew Chiara. He had watched Dante grow.

Brother had never been a casual word.

Tonight, it was gone.

Rain hammered the corrugated roof of the warehouse. Three men stood behind Ade, silent and watchful.

Between them sat a metal table.

And on it was the folder.

Contracts. Bank transfers. Government approvals. Payments routed through companies that existed only on paper.

But the money was not what had frightened Matteo.

The port expansion had been approved using a falsified safety report. A waterfront community was supposed to be evacuated first, but most of the relocation money had already disappeared.

Construction would begin with families still there.

Matteo had read the engineering assessment himself. If the work went ahead as planned, buildings could collapse.

People could die.

Ade knew it.

So did the officials being paid to approve it.

“You should have destroyed the folder,” Ade said.

Matteo looked at him.

“You mean the evidence?”

“I mean the thing that could destroy everything we built.”

“No.” Matteo’s voice remained calm. “That deal will destroy people.”

“They will be relocated.”

“You know they won’t.”

Ade’s jaw tightened.

“The compensation schedule is false. The safety report was altered. Work starts before evacuation is complete.”

“You are becoming sentimental.”

Matteo stared at him.

“There are families living there.”

“There is always a cost to building something this large.”

“Not this cost.”

The warehouse went quiet except for the rain.

Matteo looked at the three men again.

One had moved closer.

That was when he understood.

This meeting had never been about changing his mind.

His hand moved instinctively toward his jacket.

A gun appeared.

“Don’t.”

Matteo stopped.

Inside his jacket was a photograph of Chiara and Dante sitting together on the balcony at home.

Behind it was the note Chiara had handed him that morning.

Six months pregnant.

A girl, she had insisted.

He had laughed.

You cannot possibly know that.

I know.

He had kissed her stomach anyway.

Now, looking at the gun, Matteo understood that his daughter would never know his voice or remember being held by him.

But on the night he died, he had known she existed.

“Ade.”

His former brother looked at him.

“My family has nothing to do with this.”

“You should have thought about your family before you started making copies.”

Matteo’s eyes narrowed.

So Ade knew.

Not everything, though.

“Where are they?” Ade asked.

Matteo said nothing.

“The copies.”

Still nothing.

Ade stepped closer.

“Tell me where they are, and your family walks away from this.”

For one dangerous second, Matteo wanted to believe him.

Fifteen years together stopped him. He knew the tone Ade used when a decision had already been made but he wanted someone else to believe they still had a choice.

“You were always going to do this,” Matteo said.

Ade’s face hardened.

“The documents did not turn you into this man. They only forced me to see him.”

One of the gunmen stepped forward.

Ade’s voice dropped.

“Last chance. Where are the copies?”

Matteo thought of Dante.

Seven years old and already asking too many questions.

He thought of Chiara.

He thought of the daughter he would never meet.

Then he thought of the families near the port, people whose names he did not know and whose lives had been reduced to figures in a project budget.

If he gave Ade the copies, perhaps he bought himself a few more minutes.

But the project would survive him.

Other people would pay instead.

Matteo lifted his chin.

“No.”

Ade stared at him.

“Where are the copies?”

Matteo smiled.

“You’ll spend the rest of your life wondering.”

The first bullet tore through his shoulder.

His body twisted with the impact.

The second drove him backward into the metal table, sending the folder crashing to the floor.

The third dropped him.

Then came another.

And another.

By the time the gunfire stopped, blood was spreading beneath him across the concrete and toward a document beside his hand.

Matteo tried to breathe.

Pain tore through his chest.

Ade walked toward him.

Matteo looked up at the man who had once carried his son through a hospital corridor and called himself family.

There was only enough breath for one thing.

“Stop… the project.”

Ade said nothing.

Matteo’s eyes drifted toward the papers scattered across the floor.

His blood had reached their signatures.

Two names that had once built an empire together.

Then everything went quiet.

Ade stood over him for several seconds before turning to the men.

“Find every copy.”

Outside, Lagos continued as though nothing had happened. Cars moved through the rain. Ships waited in the harbour. Families slept near the waterfront, unaware that a man they would never know had chosen their lives over his own.

And somewhere across the city, Chiara Greco was waiting for her husband to come home.

He never did.

That ending… how are you feeling?

Tap one. You can change it anytime.
