The Woman Who Left Her Behind

Amara did not cry.

Amara did not cry.

Later, she would remember that as if it mattered. She stood in Room 714 holding a dead man’s letter and looked at the woman who had given birth to her.

“You’re my mother.”

Chiara nodded.

“And Matteo Greco was my father.”

“Yes.”

“Dante is my brother.”

“Yes.”

Each answer landed with the same unbearable simplicity. Amara placed the letter on the desk because her hands had begun to shake.

“How long have you known where I was?”

Chiara’s face changed. Not the question she hoped would come first.

“Answer me.”

“I knew you were alive.”

“I asked how long.”

“I found you again when you were nine.”

The room tilted slightly.

“Nine.”

“Yes.”

“And I am thirty-two.”

“Yes.”

“So for twenty-three years you knew where I was.”

Chiara’s voice broke. “Not every day. Not every address. I knew the Okonkwos had you. I knew you were safe.”

“You knew enough.”

“Yes.”

Amara laughed, once, because the alternative was something she did not trust.

“Everyone keeps telling me I was safe as if safety was the only thing a child was entitled to.”

Chiara flinched.

“Why did you leave me?”

“When Matteo died, our house was searched. Men followed Dante and me. Ade wanted the copies, and I knew if he learned there was another child—”

“I know the strategy. I just read the strategy.”

Amara pointed toward the letter.

“I am asking why you never came back for me.”

Chiara had no immediate answer. That silence hurt more than the rest.

Finally she said, “At first because I was afraid.”

“And later?”

“Because you had a family.”

“So did Dante.”

“Yes.”

“You kept him.”

The sentence struck both of them. Chiara’s eyes filled.

“I was already his mother to him. You were a baby. Hidden. I told myself the safest thing was to let the world believe you belonged nowhere near us.”

“That explains infancy.”

“Yes.”

“Not nine. Not fifteen. Not twenty-five.”

“No.”

Amara could feel something inside her changing shape. For years she had made peace with not knowing because not knowing had no face. Now the face stood three metres away wearing the same perfume as the wife of the man who murdered her father.

“Does Dante know who I am?”

Chiara looked down. Amara understood before she answered.

“How long?”

“Four years.”

This time the anger arrived cleanly.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He found me.”

“Yes.”

“And he never contacted me.”

Chiara said nothing.

The audit.

The intermediaries who had approached her firm. The suspiciously perfect fit between her expertise and the engagement. Amara felt sick.

“He put me inside Adeyemi Group.”

Chiara’s silence confirmed it. Amara picked up her bag.

“Amara—”

“No.”

“I can explain—”

“No.” She turned at the door. “You have all had decades to explain me to yourselves. I am done listening today.”

Chiara did not follow. That was the first thing Amara was grateful to her for. In the lift, she looked down at her hands.

They were still shaking.

She had gone to Room 714 looking for evidence about a dead man.

She left with a father, a mother, a brother—and the knowledge that every one of them had been part of a decision made about her without her permission.

That ending… how are you feeling?
