The folder became more dangerous the deeper they went. A bank instruction followed Letter Eight. January 1994. The amount was large enough to matter but not large enough to attract automatic scrutiny inside a company handling infrastructure contracts. The beneficiary was a consultancy Amara did not recognize. She photographed the details and turned the page.

A second payment had been authorized weeks later.

“What date did Matteo die?” she asked.

Kolade did not need to check. “February seventeenth.”

Amara looked at the document in front of her.

February twentieth.

Three days after Matteo Greco’s death. The warehouse seemed suddenly smaller. She placed the two payment instructions beside the altered safety report and Matteo’s letter. The evidence did not show a gun. It did not name a killer. It did not prove what had happened in the three missing days between one man’s death and another man’s payment.

But Amara had spent her career learning how people confessed through structure.

“You were right,” she said.

Kolade looked away. There was no satisfaction in his face. Only exhaustion.

“You think the payment was for his murder,” she continued.

“I think my father arranged something before Matteo died, and money moved after he did.”

“That is not proof of murder.”

“I know.”

“But you’ve lived as if it were.”

His laugh was quiet and bitter. “Yes.”

Amara closed the folder carefully. “Why didn’t you go to the police?”

Kolade stood with both hands braced against a shelf.

“My mother has been married to him for forty-two years.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I know.”

“Then give me one.”

He turned.

“I found out that the man who raised me may have ordered his business partner killed. I had a folder full of circumstantial evidence and a mother who had built her entire adult life around him. There was no version of what came next that did not destroy someone.”

“And doing nothing?”

Something passed across his face.

“Destroyed something too.”

That answer was honest enough to quiet her. Amara reopened the folder and continued. Near the back, beneath old statements, she found a photocopy of an account instruction Matteo had sent shortly before his death. The receiving institution was in Malta. The account number was not the same as Greco Maritime’s current account. The routing structure was.

Same bank family. Same intermediary. Same destination network, separated by three decades.

Kolade watched her face. “What?”

She pulled out the notes she had made the previous night and placed the current Greco Maritime payment trail beside Matteo’s instruction.

“The money moving through your company now is connected to whatever Matteo put in motion before he died.”

“Dante?”

“Maybe.”

Amara traced the route again.

“But Dante would have been a child when this account was created.”

Kolade looked at the documents.

“So Matteo started it.”

“Yes.”

“What was he trying to do?”

Amara thought of the missing seventh letter.

“I don’t know yet.”

She began returning the papers to the folder. Kolade reached for it, but she kept her hand on the cover.

“One more thing.”

He waited.

“You said your father may not know you found this.”

“Yes.”

“Someone revoked my access the morning after I told you about Greco. The request came from his office.”

Kolade said nothing.

“Either he knows,” Amara said, “or someone around him knows enough to be afraid of what I’m looking at.”

The silence between them lasted several seconds.

Then Kolade said, “Take the folder.”

Amara looked at him.

“It belongs in the audit file now.”

“You understand what that means?”

“Yes.”

“If this becomes evidence against your father, you do not get to take it back because you regret giving it to me.”

His eyes held hers.

“I know.”

Amara lifted the folder.

Kolade looked relieved by a decision that might destroy his family.
